âMake sure you plug the drain,â Caitlin said, bumping Alissa with her hip as she passed her in the kitchen. âWouldnât want you to drop your ring down it while you do the dishes.â
âOh, good call.â Alissa gently pulled off her engagement ring and put it safely in the middle of her kitchen counter, far away from the sink.
She absolutely adored her ring, She would have loved anything heâd given her, but the ring was so perfect that it was as if heâd plucked it out of her dreams.
âItâs weirdâit feels so new on my finger and I canât help but stare at it all day when I type,â Alissa said, turning on the water. âThat manicure we got doesnât help either. Itâs so glittery.â
Caitlin had taken her to the nail salon to get manicures after the engagement since Alissa was showing people her hand so much. Alissa usually wasnât one for that kind of pampering, but she loved the results. The delicate seafood green of her polish, with one glittery accent nail, made typing feel fancy for some reason. Sometimes when she looked down, she wondered if her hands were even hers.
âIt looks great.â Caitlin smiled, grabbing a dish towel to dry the dishes while Alissa washed. âHave you guys talked about the wedding at all?â
âNot yet, no. At least not in any serious sense. More just like, we should plan the wedding soon.â Alissa laughed and pumped some soap onto a sponge. âBut thereâs so much out there! I thumbed through one of those wedding magazines at Sandyâs and got so overwhelmed.â
âDo you know what you want?â Caitlin rested her hip against the counter. âLike the kind of wedding, at least generally? Big or small?â
âI think pretty big,â Alissa said. âLike the whole town and family. Definitely on the beach since itâs one of our favorite places. I have no idea what I want my dress to look like but I do know I want the bridesmaids to wear sundresses. And oh, seashells decorating everything.â
Alissa bit her bottom lip, scrubbing a dish for a few moments. Caitlin dried one of the dishes sheâd already washed, waiting for Alissa to speak.
âIâm wondering if Daneâs parents will come,â Alissa finally said, handing off the latest dish to Caitlin. âHis dad has been supportive, but it doesnât sound like his mom has been.â
âOh, no.â Caitlinâs brows furrowed. âWhat makes you say that?â
âJust context clues.â Alissa shrugged. âDane avoids talking about them most of the time, though Iâve heard him on the phone with them before.â
âIâm sure itâll all be okay.â Caitlin put the dish down, giving it an extra good rub before putting it away. âMaybe itâs just a matter of meeting them in person eventually.â
âMaybe.â Alissa still felt resigned. âFamily can be difficult.â
âDefinitely.â
Alissa wasnât overly concerned about what most people thought of herâshe usually just went through life making friends with relative ease, striking up conversations and having a nice time. If one of those people didnât like her, she moved on.
